Moth Taxonomy: The taxonomy of moths, especially in the superfamily Noctuoidea, has been changing in recent years. Many species have changed generic names, or moved to a different subfamily.  To get an overview of a more current arrangement see for example the list at  MOTHS OF EASTERN CANADA The arrangement below follows the older 1983 Hodges checklist. I have made a few of the changes to the generic names, older names in parenthesis.

Noctua pronuba Large Yellow Underwing  Found beached and alive on Assateague ID, Worcester CO MD, after passage of a June cold front with strong NW winds. Millions of insects were washed up on the beach. This species recently introduced to North America from Europe.
